Born Ralph Rabie in 1960, Johannes Kerkorrel emerged as one of South Africa’s leading Afrikaans voices. Starting his career as a journalist, he made his live debut in 1986 in Cape Town with sharp, satirical political cabarets. In 1987, after moving to Johannesburg, he joined forces with Andre Letoit (Koos Kombuis). Their duo soon expanded into the influential band "Johannes Kerkorrel en die Gereformeerde Blues Band" (GBB).

A pioneering anti-Apartheid artist, Kerkorrel was among the first white Afrikaans singers to earn full acceptance from both media and the public. Celebrated as a multi-talented journalist, singer-songwriter, playwright, and activist, his groundbreaking work continues to inspire and reshape South African music and culture.
