Barorisi Ba Morena, founded in 1965 at St Jacobs Saviours Church, is one of South Africa’s most iconic Clap and Tap choirs. Every member must first belong to the church, ensuring the choir’s music is rooted in faith and discipline. Guided by the late Bishop Jacob Tlou (may his soul rest in peace), the choir transformed the genre from being dismissed as Dipheko within Apostolic congregations to being embraced nationally and globally as Matshidiso. Through powerful live performances and acclaimed recordings, they destigmatised Clap and Tap and inspired countless township and village choirs. Their unique tempo, harmonies, and spiritual depth continue to captivate audiences, with their legacy extending far beyond music into cultural preservation and community pride. With 34 albums available in stores, Barorisi Ba Morena remains the “deal choir for everyone,” a living testament to resilience, spirituality, and South Africa’s rich musical heritage.
