Haymarket Opera Company enriches the musical community of Chicago and the Midwest with performances of 17th- and 18th-century operas and oratorios. Haymarket is the most active and successful early opera company in the United States that uses period instruments in the orchestra and historically informed vocal practices and staging conventions. HOC seeks to engage audiences of all ages with passionate performances of familiar as well as neglected works staged intimately and guided by close attention to details of the libretti and scores. Each performance is thoroughly researched with regard to performance practices such as gesture, dancing, costuming, and lighting. The vocalists and instrumentalists of HOC are world-class musicians who specialize in performing music from the Age of Enlightenment.
