Igbal Abilov

Igbal Abilov is scholar of Talysh origin specializing in ethnic studies, who was arrested in 2024 on fabricated "high treason" charges in apparent retaliation for his research and sentenced to 18 years in prison by an Azerbaijani court. He is a primary focus of advocacy efforts by human rights and academic freedom organizations, including Amnesty International, Scholars at Risk, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Human Rights Watch, the Committee of Concerned Scientists etc.
