Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers

Stellenbosch Madrigal Singers (SMS) is an a cappella vocal group consisting of 12 members, students and young adults who have been performing since 2004. Their repertoire includes a variety of music styles, although the focus is mainly on vocal Renaissance music, especially madrigals. Although most of the music is written for four voice parts, some of the compositions demand up to eight parts.

The group exists thanks to Matildie Thom who, as a student, learned about the concept of madrigals during a music history lesson. She approached a few friends about the idea to get together and make music purely for the social enjoyment of it just like centuries ago. Celia Vos has been managing the group since 2007, with Elsje and Harri Kemp (a brother and sister combo) taking over in 2014. They have since given many performances in order to share this passion for enjoyable musicmaking with as many people as possible.
