Mike Thurlow (Organic Gardener)
I am a retired Head Gardener with 40 years of gardening experience gained working at
Dyffryn Gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan, Aberglasney Gardens, Barnsdale Gardens and
Audley End Kitchen Garden in Essex where I restored a Victorian walled garden, growing
heritage varieties of fruit and vegetables. During my career I’ve covered all aspects of
horticulture from propagation to vine cultivation.
I was employed by Garden Organic for 14 years and am a keen advocate of organic
gardening and its benefit to the environment and wildlife. I have a particular interest Garden
History, especially the Victorian period and the lives of the Plant Hunters.
I am the author of “Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables” in the Teach Yourself Series
and over the years have contributed to various gardening magazines and local radio
programmes. I am the former advisor to the National Society of Allotment Gardeners (NAS),
providing practical advice to their members through their members’magazine and helping to
