Inayet Petker
I was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and after nearly a decade in the US have settled in South Africa.
It has been said that I have an endearing, sweet style of singing, incorporating traditional Indo-Pak vocals, Yemeni raag and I accompany some of my singing with “vocal percussion” to good effect that gives people who are used to the beats of modern music something “familiar”.
By putting English lyrics to classic Urdu and Arabic material I aspire to make the nasheeds applicable to younger generations while paying homage to those before. Those of us brought up in the west are often cut off from our religious and cultural traditions; it is the works of individuals like myself and many other artists that seek to re-connect us to our rich and splendid heritage.
