Matt Bywater, MSc: Researcher, Educator, Advocate
As the title says, I'm an academic researcher, educator and advocate. My experience and expertise lies between the fields of human rights and authoritarian extremist groups e.g. destructive cults, criminal gangs, trafficking rings etc.
Currently, my focus is on developing and promoting a human right to the freedom of mind. This work seeks to establish a political and legal framework for incorporating freedom of mind within the international human rights architecture. I work closely with the World Mental Health Coalition, who, for the first time in history, issued a Declaration of Freedom of Mind: https://worldmhc.org/declaration-of-the-freedom-of-mind. This articulates freedom of mind in written form for the very first time and opens up exciting new avenues to protect and promote our freedom of mind, including submitting the Declaration to the United Nations for adoption.
