The 1983 novel Chasing the Dragon (by Ni Kuang) includes the following passage near the end:
"To destroy a large city, it is not necessarily a natural disaster—it can be man-made. A man-made disaster is not necessarily war. A few words from a few people, or the ignorant actions of a few individuals, can cause a city to die completely. There is no need to destroy the buildings, nor to kill any of its residents. Even if the city looks the same as before, as long as the city's original virtues are lost, it can still be destroyed and brought to death."
Chasing the Dragon is a Hong Kong novel, and thus, it tells the story of Hong Kong.
