UofSC Center for Civil Rights History & Research
The Center for Civil Rights History and Research was launched in 2015 to chronicle, preserve, and share the contributions of South Carolina to the American Civil Rights Movement.
The Center, currently housed in the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, includes a unique collection of historically significant documents, including the congressional papers of Rep. James Clyburn. The development of the Center and the addition of Rep. Clyburn’s papers build on the university’s existing, robust collection of papers from noted civil rights leaders, including Joseph A. De Laine of Clarendon County, John Bolt Culbertson of Greenville and I. DeQuincey Newman and Modjeska Monteith Simkins of Columbia.
But the Center does not solely illuminate the past. The Center also adds to the university’s strong background of civil rights scholarship and engagement by hosting educational programming and events such as exhibitions, conferences and lectures that are open to the community.
