Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust

The Hereford and Gloucester Canal follows almost entirely rural course for 34 miles through the glorious countryside of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.
Work started in 1792 reaching Ledbury from Gloucester by 1798. In 1827 Steven Ballard was appointed to oversee the Canal's completion, which, reached Hereford in 1845; this was one of the last major canal routes competed and The canal stretched from the River Severn at Gloucester, via Newent, Dymock and Ledbury to Hereford, using 22 locks and 3 tunnels. It closed in 1881 to allow construction of the Led bury-Gloucester railway which then closed in 1964.

Currently active working sites at Aylestone Park, Kymin, Yarkhill, Monkhill, Ashperton, Dymock, Oxenhall, Malswick, Moat Farm, Over, Llanthony Lock.
