Nachdem sich im Juni 2019 die Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg als erste deutsche Stadt der globalen Initiative der Fab Cities angeschlossen hat, zu der bereits 34 Städte bzw. Regionen weltweit gehören, gründete sich Fab City Hamburg als gemeinnütziger Verein im Oktober 2020. Ziel der Initiative ist, städtische Ökonomien auf eine vernetzte digitale Fertigung auszurichten, so dass diese immer mehr von dem produzieren können, was sie selbst konsumieren. Die Vision ist, bis 2054 im Stadtgebiet eine nachhaltige Kreislaufwirtschaft mit Hilfe eines Open-Source-Netzwerks zu etablieren. Der Fab City Hamburg e.V. will offene Werkstätten (Open Labs), Maker Spaces und nachhaltige Projekte der Stadt verbinden und unterstützen.
