David Sammut Malta Spearfishing

Spearfishing is a unique experience. It allows for the free diver to be at one with the sea in the most natural way. The spearfisherman has the opportunity to observe the sea life up close enjoying the views, colours, forms and variety which nature has to offer.
Spearfishing is the ultimate sustainable way of fishing. The diver gets to choose what to shoot, trying to catch target fish. The spear fisher has to position himself in the best position nearest to the prey and then shoots. This is done all in one breath hold, often in not so easy conditions. Not all shots end up in a catch and this is part of the sport. All fish caught are eaten by my family and myself.
Spearfishing is a potentially dangerous sport if not done well. One has to be in good health to attempt this sport. Knowledge of free diving is paramount. Recognizing one's limits and not pushing more than that is fundamental.
Always have respect for the sea.
