Joel has been a cowboy, rancher, cattle buyer, and yard manager in a Texas commercial feedyard. Joel writes song from his personal experience and knowledge of the West and Cowboy life. In 2023 Joel was nominated for Songwriter of the Year in the IWMA having 2 songs nominated for Working Cowboy Song of the Year, "Once I Was A Cowboy" and "Last Of The Four Sixes Cowboys", a cowrite with Allan Chapman.
