Shepherds & Sheep Cévennes
After 22 years of life in the Cévennes, Southern France, I continue to be fascinated by the traditional methods of sheep farming still practised by the shepherds here and love sharing these with a wider audience. The region has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011, in recognition of the continuation of ancestral pastoral traditions such as the transhumance, where, between mid-June and September, the sheep leave the lowlands to find the good grass of the mountains. This journey is still done on foot, walking with the sheep over several days. A simple, nomadic life, perfectly in rhythm with the changing seasons and far removed from the stresses and strains of the modern world.
I live with a shepherd, a horse a pony and lots of dogs and work as a walking guide in the mountains.
