Betelehem Melaku
Betelehem Melaku is an Ethiopian-American musician who embodies the term “one woman band.” She emigrated from Ethiopia in 1997 after her mother, and now resides in Cambridge, MA, where she is a wife and mother of two boys. After learning how to play the krar at a young age, she went on to master the masenqo, piano, and violin at the Yared School of Music in Ethiopia. Betty’s father, Melaku Gelaw, was a professor at the Yared School for 28 years. He inspired her to pursue music and personally crafted the krar and masenqo she plays today. Through Betty’s mastery of these many instruments she is able to combine western and popular influences with traditional Ethiopian sounds.
