Unprofitable Instruments
"Unprofitable Instruments" is a one-person instrument shop specializing in building medieval stringed instruments. Maker Kate McWilliams has been building instruments for over twenty years, and enjoys researching and recreating underappreciated medieval instruments. She has exhibited her instruments at the Boston Early Music Festival, Berkeley Early Music Festival, Madison Early Music Festival, Twin Cities Early Music Festival, Kalamazoo Medieval Congress, and Greenwich Early Music Festival.
Kate specializes in carved-body instruments, including the rebec, vielle, and citole. She also builds monochords and occasionally Baroque trumpet marines.
