Pete Yelding
Pete Yelding is a cellist, sitarist and vocalist and the 7th generation of a family of travelling performers. He has a rooting in numerous musical traditions where improvisation is a key element. However he has dedicated most of his career to playing raga-based music and using ragas as a framework for creative projects and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Pete may be the only musician currently performing who can present a programme of ragas on both sitar and cello. He is one of a small number of cellists in the world playing Hindustani music. He is also the only musician currently in the UK who follows the gat-toda instrumental style of his ustad, the sarod master, Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan — the khalifa (“chief”) of the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana.
