Orchestra Masika Afrika

Orchestra Masika Afrika stands for the preservation and growth of truly East African music aiming to bring about positive change. We play a mix of uniquely arranged covers and original work.
The name Masika refers to the long rainy season that is unique to east Africa. We take this as an analogy to our music, as it may go on endlessly, as the rain seemingly does during 'masika'
Kenya has had a mixed cultural identity since the end of the colonial period. This melting pot helped influence some of the greatest and most unique styles of music of the time such as Rumba, twist, benga, zilizopendwa, and tribal fusions.
However this unique musical identity was lost partially due to the influence of western music cultures which now overshadows our own. Many people have tried to bring a new musical identity to Kenya but none have stepped far from western influence. It is for that reason we have gone back to the roots to regrow our unique sound.
