Nara Park’s sika deer, over 1,200 strong, roam freely across its 660 hectares. Sacred in Shinto as divine messengers, these gentle creatures are a national treasure. Ranging from fawns to stags, they’re known for bowing to visitors for shika senbei (deer crackers) sold onsite. Their coats vary seasonally—spotted in summer, darker in winter. Friendly but bold, they may nudge for treats, so caution is advised. The deer add a unique, enchanting charm to the park’s historic and natural beauty.
