Kodava Naadra Makkada Koota

Kodava Warriors Born To Rule ..

The land of Kodavas – Kodagu usually known for its warrior race and their bravery in battle has produced many warriors. Legendary Field Marshal Cariappa, General Thimmaiah and C B Muthamma were the big names that made it the golden history of Mother India.

The Kodava community has several folk dances performed during celebrations or on festivals. Bolakaat, Kombaat, Kolaat, Kathiaat, Peeliaat and Chowriaat are all folk dances performed by men. The ummathaat is performed by Kodava women. They dance in a circular motion with a swinging rhythm, with cymbals in their hands.

But the most popular dance form is called the kodava-aat (Kodava dance) seen at Kodava weddings. There is no synchronisation to the kodava aat like the other dance forms. It’s just Kodava men and women busting out some graceful moves to the tuneful music of the Kodava Valaga at weddings
