Vechoor Hariharasubramonia Iyer

Vechoor Hariharasubramonia Iyer (1925-1994), or simply "Vechoor" to those who cherish Carnatic music, left an enduring legacy of traditional, gamaka-rich music. Inspired by his lasting impact as a guru, a musician, and a great human being – almost a mythical personality from a pre-digital era – his disciples formed the Vechoor Foundation to ensure his memory and contributions are honoured.
Throughout his career, he mentored thousands of students, many of whom became celebrated musicians, including Padma Vibhushan Dr. K.J. Yesudas, Prof. Kumara Kerala Varma, Shri. Thiruvizha Jayasankar, the late Shri. Neyyatinkara Vasudevan, Smt. Kottayam Rajammal, and Shri. Prince Rama Varma. Vechoor Sir was particularly known for his inclusive spirit.
Vechoor Hariharasubramonia Iyer passed away on November 16, 1994, leaving behind an enduring legacy in the world of Carnatic music, one defined by purity, discipline, commitment to his art.
