In June of 1980, I went to my first card show. At that very same show, I will never forget seeing a pile of hockey cards with players posing in front of what looked like spotlights in the background. I had a sudden flashback...I’d seen these cards before! Suddenly, I remembered sitting in the back of my father's car while he went in to visit his friend who owned a drug store. To keep us occupied, he gave each of us a pack of hockey cards. Turns out, I was four or five years old and the cards we were opening were from the 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee set.
When I recently acquired a wrapper from this year, I knew exactly where I wanted to film the video. Yes folks, this drugstore still exists in the same location 55 years later! Some things have changed...both my dad and his friend the pharmacist are sadly gone. The drugstore has a different name and the store doesn’t look anything like it used to, but when I walked inside I felt like a little kid again! I think that is one of the main reasons people collect. To remember the simpler times and to keep a small part of us feeling young forever!
