R²D² In Action: Transient Stability Calculation tool of EMMA

The Transient Stability Calculation (TSC) tool of the EMMA product automates the calculation of the critical fault clearing time for busbar faults in power systems. Built under the DIgSILENT PowerFactory program, it evaluates both permanent faults cleared by protection devices and temporary self-extinguishing faults.

By determining the maximum duration a fault can last without causing synchronous generators to lose synchronism, the tool helps Transmission System Operators ensure system stability and assess the adequacy of busbar protection settings.

The TSC tool uses a dynamic network model and the “interval halving method” to calculate fault durations with precision, supported by DIgSILENT’s “out of step” indicator. Results provide actionable insights for operational decisions, such as re-dispatching generation or introducing new protection schemes to enhance system stability.

This tool is part of the EMMA product in the Horizon Europe R²D² project and has been developed by EMS Services, Institute Mihajlo Pupin, and Security Coordination Centre SCC Ltd. Belgrade.

EMMA (Enhanced Maintenance and Management) is a product of the Horizon Europe R²D² project that helps TSOs, DSOs, and Regional Coordination Centres improve grid reliability and resilience by optimizing maintenance, planning, and remedial actions before and after critical events.
