The Capital Connection is daily return commuter service that runs between Palmerston North and Wellington. The commuter service runs five days a week utilising refurbished SA class carriages and a single DFB locomotive. The SA carriages were originally used in Auckland before being withdrawn and stored for many years in Taumarunui, before being refurbished and introduced to service in 2023 as SR carriages. The commuter service currently does not run on weekends, public holidays or over the Christmas - New Year holiday.
The Capital Connection has five stops (Shannon, Levin, Otaki, Waikanae and Paraparaumu) on it's journey between Palmerston North and Wellington. It departs Palmerston North around 6:15am arriving into Wellington around 8.20am, and departs Wellington 5:15pm and arrives back into Palmerston North at 7:20pm.
In this video I captured the Capital Connection as it rolled through Paekakariki on it's evening service to Palmerston North.
