An Apostille is a form of authentication issued to documents for use in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention. It certifies the authenticity of a document so that it can be legally recognised in another country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is the government body responsible for legalizing or attesting official documents before they are used internationally.
Process of Apostille MOFA Authentication:
1. Notarization – The document may need to be notarized by a local authority.
2. Apostille Issuance – If the country is part of the Hague Convention, the designated authority (not MOFA) provides the apostille.
3. MOFA Attestation (if required) – Some countries require additional verification by MOFA after apostille, especially for documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational certificates, and business documents.
4. Embassy Attestation (if needed) – If the destination country is not part of the Hague Convention, further attestation from the foreign embassy may be necessary.
When is an MOFA Apostille Needed?
Studying or working abroad
Immigration and visa applications
Business setup in another country
Marriage registration in a foreign country
MOFA attestation is usually required in non-Hague Convention countries, while the apostille is enough for Hague Convention members.
