Lalon Shah (1774-1890) lived in the village of Chheuriya, near Kushtia, Bangladesh. He was a living embodiment of the Baul tradition, who yearned for spiritual enlightenment, but rejected blind faith. In that sense, he was both a mystic and a revolutionary— and it is only through navigating the nuances of this connection does his philosophy truly begin to make sense. Baul music is, thus, a music employed to probe the inherent divinity of the body, search within the self for meaning, and discover moner manush (The Man of My Heart). But it is also one of awakening for the underclass, of resistance, of class consciousness, and a pursuit of life that is pure and beautiful.

Lalon envisioned a society where all religions and beliefs would coexist in harmony. He inspired and influenced many poets and thinkers, including Rabindranath Tagore, Allen Ginsberg, Kazi Nazrul Islam, among others. Of the numerous songs attributed to Lalon, only about 800 are generally considered authentic. He left no written records of his works, which were transmitted orally and only later transcribed by his followers.

Grounded in the tradition of the ‘sahajiya’ (the belief that the object of worship is knowledge, and this knowledge resides within the self, not outside it), Lalon’s philosophy demonstrates the fundamental aspects of liberal humanism and individualism as well as the prioritization of the soul over the body. ‘Dhonno dhonno boli tare’ is one of the most widely sung of Lalon’s songs. The lyrics - Bedhechhe emon ghor, shunner opor posta re - would loosely translate into – He built a house in the air, built it strong and well, sitting on just one pole, praise be upon him, we say (translation by Neel Akash). The song, lovingly rendered by Chandana Majumdar in her inimitable style, brings to life the eternal question of self-reflection.

Chandana Majumdar’s hugely successful career as a folk singer and more recently as a playback artist, has ostensibly pushed her to the ranks of one of the best-loved artists in the country. Her full-throated style, emblazoned with the philosophical depth of the songs of the hinterlands, creates an infectious energy on stage.
