A playthrough of Taito's 1994 beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Sonic Blast Man II.
Played on the normal level as Sonic Blast Man.
Sonic Blast Man II is the SNES exclusive follow-up to the 1992 SNES reimagining • Sonic Blast Man (SNES) Playthrough of Taito's 1990 arcade game, and it was the last game to feature the titular superhero in a starring role.
In terms of quality, this sequel is a major step up from the first SNES game. This time, you get to choose between three playable characters - Sonic Blast Man is now joined by Sonia and Captain Choyear - and two-player co-op play is now an option. The controls are smoother, the movesets have been expanded, the enemies exhibit a larger variety of tactics, and the difficulty balance has been tweaked. It still poses a good challenge, but the improved responsiveness and feedback make the end-game far less frustrating.
The arcade-inspired bonus games are gone and the character sprites are smaller, but those strike me as fair trade-offs for the sequel's smoother animation, improved gameplay fluidity, and lack of slowdown. The backgrounds look much nicer and feature more animation, and the boss designs show more creativity. I was cracking up the first time I saw the bad guy turn one of his minions into a frog that immediately became a meal for a dinosaur in a dog collar. The music also sounds better thanks to the improved sample set, and there are more corny digitized voice clips, of which I'm a big fan.
Like the previous game, Sonic Blast Man II feels like a derivative take on the Final Fight formula, but it comes much closer to matching the quality of Capcom's efforts. It's not quite on par with • Final Fight 2 (SNES) Playthrough , but it comes much closer than than the likes of • Brawl Brothers (SNES) Playthrough .
All in all, it's a welcome improvement over an already solid game, and well worth checking out for fans of SNES brawlers.
