Andy Simmons, Physics Teacher - Vista Ridge High School

Andrew Simmons explains his journey from serving as a U.S. Air Force pilot to becoming a Vista Ridge High School physics teacher. Simmons graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1991 with a degree in bioenvironmental engineering. To apply his extensive background in engineering sciences, and his keen interest in physics, he pursued Air Force pilot training. During his 22 years of service, the pilot conducted many in-flight fueling missions as a KC-135 Stratotanker commander, instructor and trainer. He also piloted the T-1 Jayhawk, which has twin turbofan engines capable of sustaining operating speeds exceeding 500 mph. He has flown aircraft around the world, including flights over the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq and Afghanistan. Retired Lt. Col. Simmons earned his teaching certificate in science through the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. He was a student teacher at Skyview Middle School, ahead of starting a formal teaching career this year at Vista Ridge High School.

“There was no other choice but to become an educator,” said Simmons, who, as an instructor for young pilots, says he “really fell in love” with instructing and teaching. “My parents were educators; I grew up in education. I had a great time in the military, teaching and instructing."

“I’m never so tired as the day I get home, after a teaching day, but I’m passionate about it. It’s a great tired.”
