The New Zealand border will reopen to vaccinated New Zealanders and other presently eligible travellers from Australia at 11:59 p.m. on February 27 and the same groups of individuals from the rest of the world on March 13.

The five-step reconnecting plan from the government will ensure all New Zealanders and key visa holders can begin to enter the country through the upcoming three months. Recently, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated to the media that this action would assist with economic recovery and address labour shortages.

From February 27, vaccinated Kiwis and eligible Australian travellers can enter New Zealand without remaining in controlled isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities. Two weeks following March 13, New Zealanders and qualified visitors from the remaining world will be able to come home.

Ardern stated that while travellers will no more be required to remain in MIQ, they are maintaining border measures to decrease the spread of the virus. She further commented that the self-isolation conditions for travellers would be ten days; however, it will fall to seven days when New Zealand advances to phase two of the pandemic strategy as cases increase.

On April 12, the government will extend border extension to include a large international student group of up to 5,000 students for admission ahead of semester two and temporary visa holders who meet applicable visa requirements.
