The Motobu Udoundei is a martial art that has been passed down for generations in the Motobu family, a relative of the royal dynasty of the ancient Ryūkyū Kingdom (Okinawa). The word “Udoun” is linked with the royal lineage, and the word “Dei” (hand) means martial arts. Therefore, Motobu Udoundei stands for “martial art of the Motobu clan, relatives of the royal family”. The Motobu Udoundei techniques were secret, transmitted to the elder son of the Motobu family only.
However, due to the various circumstances that led to the collapse of the Ryūkyū dynasty, the 11th headmaster Motobu Chōyū chose as his successor an outsider, Uehara Seikichi who became the 12th headmaster of the school during the Taishō Period (1912-1926). Uehara then decided to teach this exclusive martial art to common people.
By actively disseminating it through public demonstrations, Motobu Udoundei became known all over Japan and soon in the West as well. On August 17th 2005, on his 99th birthday, Uehara Seikichi chose as his successor a descendant of the Motobu Clan, Motobu Chōsei who still acts as current headmaster nowadays.
The Motobu Udoundei is a martial art that focuses on situations where one needs to fight against multiple opponents. Therefore, its practitioners use sword, 2-sword style and many different weapons. Moreover, the techniques are generally performed while walking. The school first teaches basic empty hand fighting, and then goes on to weapons instruction. Students then learn the Torite techniques, holds that allow to immobilise the opponent without injuring him. After continuously repeating those hard and soft techniques, students finally reach the stage where they can learn the secret teachings of Maite and the Uzumaki Ryūmaki no Ken.
