Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit! In today’s video I’m debating one of my viewers about DEI and “race swapping” in video games. My chatter claimed that any push for diverse characters — like changing a character’s race or adding one for the sake of diversity — is only unpopular with conservatives because they’re racist. But I pushed back and explained why it’s not about racism for many critics — it’s about context, coherence, and narrative fit.
We talk about actual examples like Assassin’s Creed: Shadows and the controversy over including Yasuke — a historical African servant, not a samurai — in a game set in feudal Japan. While many critics heard “forced diversity” in that choice, others point out that Yasuke was an actual historical figure and not just a random race-swap. Which was proven false as the author of that research was proven a fraud.
Here’s what I break down:
Historical legitimacy matters: Yasuke is based on a real historical figure who served under Oda Nobunaga, but, he wasn't a samurai.
What fans are actually frustrated about: Some reactions to that choice weren’t just about race — they were about why an East Asian protagonist wasn’t featured in a Japan-set game, how the inclusion was framed, and whether developers communicated creative intent clearly.
Why random race swaps without narrative support feel forced: Fans often feel disconnected when a character’s background doesn’t align with the setting — or when it’s presented as a token addition rather than something grounded in story, culture, or world-building.
