Simon Phillips and Protocol V. This performance was on January 23rd, 2022 at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. Band members are Simon Phillips - Drums (I know obviously), Ernest Tibbs - bass guitar, Otmaro Ruiz - keyboards, Jacob Scesney - sax, and Alex Sill - guitar.
The sound is ok. It's taken with a cell phone, what can I say. Not great but if you can get past it you'll really dig the music. I sure did. The beginning of the show showcases the band's newest material from their fifth album. Really good. Unfortunately, I didn't capture any of that as I wasn't planning on videoing. But I did manage to get The Long Road Home at the top of the vid which is from the new album and got a good chunk of the show including an engaging drum solo (beginning at the 23-minute mark). But does one really need three snare drums? Well, yes. And Simon shows us how it's done. Amazing. As a drummer myself I got the best seat in the house. (If it wasn't for that confounded gong bass drum!).
