Black Africans in the Ancient Mediterranean | Dr. Rebecca Futo Kennedy

In this episode Dr. Rebecca Futo Kennedy guides us into the ancient Mediterranean and makes a complicated subject even more complicated!

We experience the history of Africans outside of Africa and especially black Africans in the ancient Mediterranean. From discussing the complications of defining and locating blackness in the classical world we see the evolution of ancient empires, trade and etc, as the ancient world as the ancient Mediterranean becomes even more interconnected.

We also explore citizenship and immigrants in ancient Greece, African Animal Handlers, to the cult of ISIS in the Greek and Roman World. Were black people considered exotic? More Valuable? We also touch on prejudices in ancient Greece against Egyptians while also exploring an amusing lawsuit in ancient Athens.

Doctor Rebecca Futo Kennedy is Associate Professor of Classics, Women's and Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies at Denison University; and the Director of the Denison Museum. Her research focuses on the political, social, and cultural history of Classical Athens, Athenian tragedy, ancient immigration, ancient theories of race and ethnicity, and the reception of those theories in modern race science.
