Sony entered the TV market in the United States with this television, the 8-301W, in 1961. While it wasn't the first fully transistorized television, it could (and did) boast other firsts. It was followed by many Sony "Micro TV's" in the 1960s, long long before the Sony Watchman.
In this video, I introduce the history of the Sony 8-301W and compare Sony's marketing "facts" to the truth. I take a Sony 8-301W that I bought off eBay and open it up to perform the minor repairs necessary to make it watchable and presentable. I was lucky;, not much had to be done.
