English excerpts From H.E.Tongkhor rinpoche this morning’s dharma class“Written to a brotherly friend”Nagarjuna’s letter to Maharajah Gautamputr Series (17) on July 13,2025
Did quite a deep dive today into Nagarjuna’s “Letter to a Friend”! We focused on Verse 50, which tackles a fundamental question: Where do the “aggregates” (the components of our perceived self) come from?
Nagarjuna systematically refutes various theories, stating that the aggregates don’t simply appear out of nowhere, from an eternal source, a divine creator, or by themselves. He clarifies that they aren’t mere “whims” or accidents.
Instead, he powerfully asserts that their true source is ignorance, fueled by karmic actions and moistened by craving. Think of it like a seed (karma/ignorance) being watered (craving) to produce a sprout (the aggregates). This verse highlights the profound interconnectedness of our mind, actions, and experience.
Great discussion, and so much to reflect on! #Nagarjuna #BuddhistPhilosophy #Mindfulness #SelfReflection #Interdependence #KarmaIsReal
