Sat amid the parked anonymae of this quiet Monterey street is Porsche Number 1: quite literally the first Porsche ever built. This priceless artefact — the first car ever to bear the family name — trialled the pattern for the decades of revered Porsche sports cars that would follow. Its engine placed wrong-way-around and its architecture so fundamentally strange, 1948’s serial-number 356-001 is as much the epicentre of the Porsche mythos as any enthusiast could ever dream to drive.

And by some miraculous judgement, the historic roadster waits today with a key in the ignition, and a full hour earmarked just for me.
