“Our letters, madam, show’d much more than jest.”
Love’s Labor’s Lost, V.ii
Letter writing (among the literate) was extensive in Elizabethan England. With no text, email, telephone, internet, television or radio, letters were the key to personal and government communication, news, gossip and commerce. While Will of Stratford left no letters, notes, plays, poems, or other text in his own handwriting, plenty of other people did. A world of information is revealed to delight scholars and amateur sleuths alike!
Join Bonner Cutting, Dorothea Dickerman, Alex McNeil, Phoebe Nir and the Blue Boar Tavern’s ever-popular bartender, Jonathan Dixon as they bring their favorite period letters to the Tavern. You never know what will be revealed hidden between the lines!
