CDDFT Leads the Way in Greener Surgery
Back in 2014, CDDFT became one of the first NHS Trusts to introduce reusable laparoscopic ports – dramatically cutting plastic waste, reducing emissions, and saving over £66,000 in a single year. Now, over a decade later, the environmental impact of this change is still growing.
Consultant Surgeon Andrew Gilliam explains how this carbon-friendly approach has transformed one of the most common procedures, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, by replacing single-use equipment with reusable systems.
This initiative is just one example of how CDDFT is making meaningful progress toward the NHS’s goal of becoming net-zero. By embedding sustainability into clinical practice, we’re reducing our environmental impact while maintaining high standards of patient care.
“The climate emergency is also a health emergency,” says Mr Gilliam. “As clinicians, we’re seeing the impact of environmental damage on our patients. It’s our duty to act – sustainably, thoughtfully, and urgently.”
