VALÈNCIA (EFE/Loli Benlloch). The year 2024 has been forever marked in the collective imagination of Valencians by the devastating floods in the province of Valencia generated by the Dana of October 29, which have left a deep scar with multiple ramifications that will take time to heal.
That Tuesday, October 29, has become a day difficult to forget, which began with a red warning for rain and gave way to an extraordinary episode of very intense rainfall (Turís collected 771 liters per square meter in 24 hours, double what it rains in a year in the entire Valencian Community) that were concentrated on the Magro, Júcar and Turia rivers and the head of the Poyo ravine.
The torrential rains caused overflows and increased flows in gullies such as Poyo, which in the afternoon experienced a flash flood in the lower part - the metropolitan area of ​​Valencia, where it hardly rained that day - and exceeded 2,000 cubic metres per second, five times the flow of the Ebro.
The water overflowed violently and swept away everything in its path: houses, cars, roads, businesses and high-speed train, suburban train and metro lines, leaving an area that concentrates 30% of the province's population isolated before flowing into l'Albufera with tons of waste dragged along.

Confirmed fatalities: 227 (219 in Valencian Community; 7 in Castilla-La Mancha; 1 in Andalusia).
Autopsies performed: 227, of which 8 died from causes unrelated to the DANA.
Identified: 219, the total number of deaths from causes related to the DANA.
Handed over to relatives: 211, Missing: 11, Affected municipalities: 78 municipalities (75 in Valencia; 2 in Castilla-La Mancha; 1 in Andalusia).
When at 8:11 p.m. the Generalitat sent a warning to the mobile phones to avoid travel, the water had already flooded a large part of the area that was finally affected: 562 square kilometers (the equivalent of 56,200 football fields) in 75 municipalities where 845,371 people live.
The municipality with the most deaths was Paiporta, with 45, followed by Catarroja, with 25, and the 17 recorded in the districts of Valencia, located on the other side of the new course of the Turia River. It saved the capital from flooding and was built after another great flood that lives on in the memory of Valencians, that of 1957, which left more than 80 dead.
More than 37,000 people had to be rescued and thousands lost everything under a mud that, especially during the first days, when professional help did not arrive, which finally mobilized 20,000 public workers, collaborated in removing thousands of volunteers, especially young people, who arrived on foot due to the impossibility of accessing it in any other way. Because if there is one good thing about this catastrophe, it is the solidarity it has awakened.
