In this video we begin a Latin readthrough of De Ratione Discendi et Docendi. This fascinating book, written by Joseph De Jouvency (Latine "Juvencius") and first published in 1703, was the approved guide to study and pedagogy for teachers working in Jesuit schools of the early modern period. These schools followed the classical humanist curriculum laid out in the famed Ratio Studiorum, in which the vast majority of teaching and learning occured in Latin. Today we read the introduction and the first few sections, in which Juvencius makes the case for humanist teachers to thoroughly learn Greek, explains how best to do so, and provides a fairly exhaustive list of what he considers to be the best authors for learning Greek.
