What is the PAScribe 4Fold Symmetry

0In 2017, when I started to consolidate and codify my approach to Copperplate Script, I developed this overarching construct which housed the letters in 4 different facets, and this is how the PAScribe 4Fold Symmetry was born.

It comprises of Angular Confinement (AC), Elliptical Confinement (EC), Continuous Movement (CM) and Variable Velocity (VV).

Angular Confinement (AC) contains the Copperplate Script Letters and stops them from organically growing so they are all consistent in width, shape and height. It relies on a set of bounding lines which house the marks of the letter. By ‘Tangentially Touching (TT), the curves to roughly the centre of the line, it trains you to plot the curve and not guess where it is.

Elliptical Confinement (EC) generates an overarching ellipse which houses the letter and its internal smaller ellipses. The overarching ellipse also dictates the vertical ‘Zone of Flourishing’ helping you to work out the extent and type of flourishes would work with your letter.

Continuous Movement (CM) ensures you understand that breathing is the key. ‘Inhale on the upstroke, exhale on the downstroke’. As we inhale we make a trace in the air and exhale make on the page. By slowing our breathing, it helps us give the tool the time to write the letters, in tandem with a more measured breath connecting the practice to a kind of mindfulness meditation. This can be applied to all calligraphy.

Variable Velocity (VV) teaches you to see that different parts of the letters are written at different velocities. The tighter the turn the slower the movement.

My PAScribe Geometric Copperplate Grid is divided into sixths, were ninths, sixths, halves and thirds are key to the placement of lines for improved spacing inside and between the letters.
