The evolution of the Chemnitz tram system (1880-2026)

In 1880, the first horse-drawn tram line opened in Chemnitz, Saxony. Following electrification in 1894, the narrow-gauge tram network was steadily expanded until 1929. In 1958, the decision was made to convert to standard gauge to allow the use of modern Tatra trams – however, this also led to the closure of some lines, particularly in the north of the city. Finally, in 2002, the regional light rail system, in the form of the CityBahn (later renamed ChemnitzBahn), began operating. In addition to several new tram lines, the ChemnitzBahn is slated for further expansion in the coming years.
