The railway in South Korea is operated as a state-owned railway; however, the construction and maintenance of the railway infrastructure, as well as train operations, are under state control. The first railway line in Korea was the 33 km section between Noryangjin (Seoul) and Jemulpo (Incheon). It was opened in 1899.

Until the early 1970s, the railway was the most important means of long-distance transport in South Korea.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is the supreme railway authority. Reporting to the Ministry are the Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA), the railway infrastructure authority, and the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL), the railway operations authority.

Die Eisenbahn in Südkorea wird als Staatsbahn betrieben, jedoch stehen Bau und Unterhalt der Eisenbahninfrastruktur in Südkorea sowie der Fahrbetrieb unter eigener Verwaltung.
