Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 by Jewish families as a new, Hebrew city on the sand dunes north of Jaffa, named Ahuzat Bayit, later changed to Tel Aviv. It rapidly grew into a hub of Hebrew culture and economic activity, especially during the British Mandate. A unique "White City" of Modernist architecture was built in the 1930s, and the city became the site of Israel's declaration of independence in 1948. In 1950, Tel Aviv merged with the ancient port city of Jaffa to form Tel Aviv-Yafo, establishing Tel Aviv as Israel's vibrant cultural and economic center.
The neighborhood was renamed Tel Aviv, a name derived from biblical references and Theodore Herzl's novel, meaning "Hill of Spring".
