Regardless of why you wear face makeup, you probably want a bright radiant finish from it. But when it just doesn't look right, is it the make up? Or is it how you apply it? Or is it actually your skin? Today I'll tell you the secret to great looking makeup.
Every serious artist uses a clean smooth canvas to start a new painting. Applying makeup has many features in common with painting a picture. You can have the best quality makeup and the best application techniques, but if your canvas, which in this case is your skin, is not prepared properly, your makeup can actually make your skin look worse.
To understand why, let's first talk about mascara. The reason people use it is to make their eye lashes more prominent. Mascara does that by coating the lashes to make them longer, thicker or darker. Makes sense, right?
Now lets fast forward to your skin and face makeup. As you get older, your facial skin accumulates excess dead cells that should have fallen off but instead remain attached on the surface of your skin in flakes and tiny piles. While you can't see them, you certainly can see what they do: they make your skin look dull, tired looking, discolored, large pored, and uneven.
Lets go back to the mascara again. Remember that by coating the lashes, it makes them more prominent? Similarly with skin, if you apply makeup to skin with flakes and piles of dead cells, your makeup coats them making them look bigger which is much worse, exaggerating your skin's unevenness. Mascara déjà-vu! Makeup isn't spackle, it won't fill in the gaps between the dead cells... It just makes them look worse.
But the solution's easy. If you exfoliate your skin regularly and remove those distorting dead cells, you'll be applying your make up to a smooth surface. Then it will apply smoothly and evenly, giving you the bright radiant finish that makes your skin look great.
And here's more good news. Your makeup will go on smoother and faster, saving you time and money.
But let me ask you an interesting question. Since regular exfoliation makes your skin brighter, smoother, more even toned and glowing, will you really even need makeup if you exfoliate? I know exfoliation has succeeded when my patients tell me they no longer need to use foundation.
