The Bayer process is the first stage in the extraction of aluminium. It involves the purification of bauxite to obtain pure anhydrous aluminium oxide, also known as alumina. The Bayer process of aluminium involves the dissolution of bauxite in caustic soda to remove the impurities, the precipitation of aluminium hydroxide from the resulting solution and the thermal decomposition of aluminium hydroxide to obtain pure anhydrous aluminium oxide.
