In this episode of Voice of Urdu’s Muslim Personalities Series, we remember Abu Hatim Muzaffar Isfarazi (also known as Abu Muzaffar Isfarayini) – a brilliant physicist, mathematician, and astronomer of the 11th century.
Centuries before modern tools like Spectroscopy, Chemical Analysis, and Thermal Analysis, Abu Hatim Isfarazi developed an innovative balance scale using the principle of Specific Gravity. This invention helped detect not only the presence of alloys in metals like gold and silver but also their exact proportion.
He also introduced the unit “Oqiyyah”, which later evolved into the modern Ounce. His contributions played a significant role in industry, trade, and scientific observation during the Seljuk era.
Apart from physics, he contributed to astronomy, mechanics, and hydrostatics. He was actively involved in the construction of the great observatory in Isfahan under Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah, working alongside scholars like Omar Khayyam. His remarkable compilation “Al-Mukhlis fi al-Hay’ah” combined ancient and modern astronomical knowledge, making the subject accessible to students of his time.
Though less famous than contemporaries like Ibn al-Haytham, Al-Biruni, Ibn Sina, and Al-Razi, Abu Hatim Isfarazi remains a shining star of the Islamic Golden Age of Science.
