Already mentioned in 1250—when it was located outside the city and spelled "rue de Gravelier"—rue des Gravilliers is one of the oldest streets in Paris. It is one of the streets laid out at the beginning of the 13th century during the creation of the Saint-Martin-des-Champs district.
It takes its name from the workers who prepared gravel ash by burning dried vinegar lees to prepare fabrics for dyeing; they were called graveliers.
