James Heffernan, a renowned Dartmouth Professor, has a fascinating new book on literature and politics at the dawn of World War ll. Few writers have Heffernan’s magic gift of synthesizing literature, history and politics, nor his talent as a literary storyteller. Heffernan is also a robust defender of the Humanities, currently under assault as the academy waters down its curriculum to please “market based” forces fueling the rise of the business major. Indeed, if there’s a war against the Humanities in higher ed (and we believe there is) Heffernan is just the general we need to make sure the Age of Enlightenment (and perhaps democracy itself) isn’t snuffed out. In the grand tradition of Harold Bloom, Heffernan is the English Professor you wish you had (if you could afford the tuition). But thanks to Public Voice Salon and YouTube: class is now in session! So, pay attention and take notes.
